Dorking Folk Club

The club meets weekly on Wednesday nights from 8.30 pm and provides a venue within central Surrey where the very best British traditional and acoustic musicians, small bands and singers can be heard. There are generally two types of evening:

Guest nights
The club aims to provide as broad a cross-section of music as possible, to highlight the range of styles that constitute traditional music. Over the past few years we have enjoyed a whole host of well known artists: John Renbourn, Last Night’s Fun, Bob Fox & Stu Luckley, Dave Burland, Eddie Walker, The Ex-Patriot Game, Jez Lowe, The Devil’s Interval, Martin Simpson, Nancy Kerr and James Fagan, Richard Durrant, Martin Carthy, Chris Moreton, Steve Tilston, Spiers and Boden (Bellowhead), Les Barker, Simon Mayor and Hilary James, Vin Garbutt, Ken Perlman, Karen Tweed & Roger Wilson and many more. The Club also showcases rising new talent, so you often get the opportunity to see the stars of tomorrow here today.

`Singers’ nights
The club also has a role in encouraging local musicians and singers to get together and perform traditional music in a more informal way. Not just for singers, these are open to all – for musicians, singers, any acoustic performer who would like to take a floor spot and perform a couple of items for the enjoyment of all. And there is no pressure to perform (you put your name down if you want to) as we actively welcome non-performers who just want to come along and listen. A relaxed, friendly and supportive atmosphere hosted by our resident MCs.

Occasionally we host Ceilidh evenings which are becoming popular and fun for all - informal and convivial evenings of easy social dancing with great bands to bop to! There is a door charge for entry, which varies according to the programme. An annual membership fee gives a reduction on the entry charge to all guest nights, but you don’t have to be a member to come along on any evening.

The club was formed in May 1976 and although it has been through a few metamorphoses, name changes and has had different venues over the years, it has always been successful in bringing acoustic and traditional music to Surrey for over 32 years. We aim to keep folk and acoustic music live and available and to support live artists – they need you and you are always guaranteed a great evening’s entertainment.
